Course Overview
The program of articulated awards in Genomics and Precision Medicine provides a flexible route for medical practitioners to enhance their knowledge as part of their continuing professional education.
The program incorporates units of study reflecting the diverse and rapidly changing nature of genomics and precision medicine. The units of study provide increasing depth and breadth of skills in genetic diagnosis, genomic testing and variant interpretation, ethical, legal and counselling issues and knowledge of genomic therapeutics and precision medicine, suitable for both trainees and experienced practitioners.
Skills developed will be relevant to all areas of medicine where genomics and other “omic” technologies have a significant impact on clinical care and management including:
- neurology
- cardiology
- oncology
- nephrology
- ophthalmology, and
- subspecialty areas in paediatrics, obstetrics and adult medicine.
Course structure
The Master of Medicine (Genomics and Precision Medicine) requires the successful completion of 48 credit points of units of study including:
- 12 credit points of compulsory units of study;
- 24 credit points of stream specific units of study; and
- 12 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.
The Master of Medicine (Advanced) (Genomics and Precision Medicine) requires the successful completion of 60 credit points of units of study including:
- 48 credit points of study as required for the Master; and
- 12 credit points of project units of study.
The Graduate Diploma in Medicine (Genomics and Precision Medicine) requires the successful completion of 36 credit points of units of study including:
- 6 credit points of compulsory units of study;
- 24 credit points of stream specific units of study; and
- 6 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.
The Graduate Certificate in Medicine (Genomics and Precision Medicine) requires the successful completion of 24 credit points of units of study including:
- 24 credit points of stream specific units of study.
Course outcomes
Students will build a skill set which will enable them to apply Genomics and Precision Medicine in medical practice at both primary health care and specialty levels.
This skill set will be relevant throughout the clinician’s career as new omics approaches are applied in healthcare. Students will also have opportunities to develop non-clinical skills including clinical teaching and research and lay foundations for later clinical skills in individual and team approaches.
