Computational Science
Study in the discipline of Computational Science is offered by the School of Physics in the Faculty of Science. Units of study in this major are available at standard and advanced level.
Programme structure and content
Computational science is the application of computers to the solution of scientific problems. It covers the formulation and analysis of problems, the use of software packages and programs to solve these problems computationally, simulations and modeling, mathematical and numerical analysis, high-performance supercomputing, graphics, visualisation, and programming. Computational science differs from computer science in that the emphasis is on solving problems in the natural sciences, i.e. physics, chemistry, biology, geology, etc.
First year planning for a Computational Science major
Computational Science is an interdisciplinary major comprising core and elective units of study at the Senior level offered by several Schools and Departments in the Faculty of Science (see Table 1).
Recommended: COSC1003/1903, INFO1103 and INFO1105/1905 and 12 credit points of Junior Mathematics and 18 credit points selected in consultation with an advisor.
Requirements for a major
For a major in Computational Science the minimum requirement is 24 credit points chosen from the core or elective senior units of study listed for this subject area, of which at least 12 credit points are from the core senior units of study.
