Composition Principal Study
Unit outlines will be available through Find a unit outline two weeks before the first day of teaching for 1000-level and 5000-level units, or one week before the first day of teaching for all other units.
Composition Principal Study units
Composition principal study requirements applies to students in the following degrees. Specific requirements are listed in the relevant Composition enrolment pattern.
(a) BMusic (Composition):
(i) 48 credit points in Composition 1-8
(b) BMusic/BAdvanced Studies (Composition):
(i) 48 credit points in Composition 1-8.
(c) BMusic (Music Education):
(i) 24 credit points in Composition 1-4.
(d) Diploma of Music:
(i) 24 credit points in Composition 1-4.
CMPN1601 Composition 1
Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Assoc. Professor Paul Stanhope Session: Semester 1 Classes: 2 hour lecture, small group tutorials and individual tutorials; attend weekly composition unit seminar. Assessment: Portfolio of creative work as directed by the coordinator (90%), attendance and participation (10%) Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) day

The development of compositional techniques is integral to the ability to best express musical ideas and material. The focus of this unit is the creative work of students which is developed through the study of a range of compositional topics. Aspects of pitch, rhythm, counterpoint, notation, instrumentation and structure are considered both in the abstract and in relation to a variety of music.

CMPN1602 Composition 2
Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Assoc. Professor Paul Stanhope Session: Semester 2 Classes: 2 hour lecture plus small group and individual tutorials; attend weekly composition unit seminar (1hr). Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Dr Daniel Rojas Session: Semester 1,Semester 2 Classes: Weekly individual lessons (45 min.), weekly Composition Seminar, weekly Supplementary Class Prerequisites: CMPN1602 Assessment: Submission of a portfolio of compositions, with accompanying recordings, of a suggested duration between 6-10 minutes (80%); small homework tasks throughout the semester (20%) Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) day

Principal Study Composition supports the sustained development of compositional craft and creative voice through the preparation of composition(s) to be submitted at the end of each semester. Via one to one (individual) lessons, attendance at the weekly Composition Seminar and Supplementary Classes, students are expected to progressively advance through Composition 3 to 8. By the conclusion of this degree, students will have demonstrated a very high level of compositional ability, research capacity and notation/production skills. In Composition 3, weekly Supplementary Classes cover a range of topics relevant to craft and creativity. Small homework tasks are set to consolidate the topics covered. One semester of individual lessons will be focussed on instrumental composition and the other on electroacoustic composition.
