Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary major. Units of study in this major are available at standard level.

Program structure and content

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary area of science, involving computer science, computational science, mathematics, statistics, and the life sciences (ie. biology, medicine, etc). It is responsible for the development and use of computer systems, databases, software, networks, and hardware to solve scientific problems in a wide variety of areas ranging from biology to medicine.

First year planning for a Bioinformatics major

Essential: 12 credit points of Junior units of study in Mathematics and Statistics (including MATH1015/1005/1905), 12 credit points of Junior units of study in Biology or MBLG1001/1901/1991, 12 credit points of Junior units of study in Chemistry, and 12 credit points from Junior units of study in Information Technologies (ie, INFO1103/1903 and INFO1105/1905).

Requirements for a major

For a major in Bioinformatics, students must complete a minimum of 24 credit points from senior units of study in the Life Sciences, Statistics, and Information Technologies, including:-
(i) at least one of BIOL3018/3918, BIOL3026/3926, BIOL3044/3944 and BCHM3092/3992; and
(ii) at least one of STAT3012/3912 and STAT3014/3914; and
(iii) either COMP3520 or (by departmental permission INFO3911 or INFO3912); and
(iv) BINF3101
