Music Theatre Principal Study

Music Theatre Principal Study units

Music Theatre principal study requirements applies to students in the following degrees. Specific requirements are listed in the relevant Music Theatre enrolment pattern.
(a) BMusic (Performance):
(i) 24 credit points in Voice 1-2, 3-4 (Extended);
(ii) 48 credit points in Music Theatre Performance 5-8 (Extended).
(b) BMusic/BAdvanced Studies (Performance):
(i) 24 credit points in Voice 1-2, 3-4 (Extended);
(ii) 48 credit points in Music Theatre Performance 5-8 (Extended).
Music Theatre Performance 5-8 (Extended) will be introduced from 2023.
VSAO1611 Voice 1

Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Dr Rowena Cowley Session: Semester 1,Semester 2 Classes: 13 x 1hr lessons/semester, 1 x 2hr vocal performance class/week, 1 x formal performance workshop performances/semester and attendance as required Assessment: Teacher grade (70%), vocal performance class (30%), performance workshop (pass/fail). Students must pass all assessments. Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) day
Students will explore repertoire appropriate to their individual development, with an emphasis on the development of technical skills, musical expression, diction/language and communication. In lessons, vocal performance class and performance workshop, students apply these skills in performance and while reflecting on their own and peers' work. On completion of this unit students should be able to demonstrate technical, musical, musical, diction/language and performance skills that will prepare their vocal studies at higher levels.
VSAO1612 Voice 2

Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Dr Rowena Cowley Session: Semester 1,Semester 2 Classes: 13 x 1hr lessons/semester, 1 x 2hr vocal performance class/week, 2 x formal performance workshop performances/semester and attendance as required. Prerequisites: VSAO1611 Assessment: 1 x 20 min Jury performance (50%), vocal performance class (30%) teacher grade (20%), performance workshop (pass/fail). Students must pass all assessments. Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) day
Students will continue to develop an approach to repertoire that supports their technical development, musical and textual expression. Lessons, vocal performance class and performance workshop provide opportunities for informal and formal performance and feedback. On completion of this unit, a short jury recital performance provides an opportunity to demonstrate developing musical, technical and language skills that will underpin their future vocal development.
VSAO2213 Voice 3 (Extended)

Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Dr Rowena Cowley Session: Semester 1,Semester 2 Classes: 13 x 1hr lessons/semester, 1 x 2hr vocal performance class/week, 2 x formal performance workshop performances/semester and attendance as required. Prerequisites: VSAO1612 Assessment: Teacher grade (70%), vocal performance class (30%), performance workshop (pass/fail). Students must pass all assessments. Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) day
In this unit students will negotiate with their teacher a programme of study that supports their technical, musical, diction/language and communicative development. Lessons, vocal performance class and performance workshop provide opportunities for informal and formal performance. Performance analysis is encouraged through feedback from peers and faculty. On completion of this unit students should be able to demonstrate growing technical competence, fluency and some interpretative distinctiveness.
VSAO2214 Voice 4 (Extended)

Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Dr Rowena Cowley Session: Semester 1,Semester 2 Classes: 13 x 1hr lessons/semester, 1 x 2hr vocal performance class/week, 2 x formal performance workshops/semester and attendance as required. Prerequisites: VSAO2213 Assessment: 1 x 25min jury qualifying exam (80%), vocal performance class (10%), teacher grade (10%), performance workshops (pass/fail). Students must pass all assessments. Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) day
Students at this level will be working closely with their teachers to prepare a sustained performance for jury/recital assessment. Students further develop their performance and critical capacities in vocal performance class and performance workshop. On completion of this unit students should be able to perform their chosen repertoire with sound technique, language/diction and musical fluency and some interpretative distinctiveness.
