Digital Music and Media Core units

Digital Music and Media Program units
Students undertaking BMusic (Digital Music and Media Program) must complete 72 credit points of program units comprising of:
(i) 6 credit points in Foundations of Digital Music and Media;
(ii) 18 credit points in Digital Composition 1-3;
(iii) 12 credit points in Composition 7-8;
(iv) An additional 36 credit points as listed in the Standard Enrolment Pattern.
Students undertaking the Diploma of Music in Digital Music and Media must complete 24 credit points of program units comprising of:
(i) 6 credit points in Foundations of Digital Music and Media;
(ii) 18 credit points in Digital Composition 1-3.
Students undertaking the Digital Music and Media minor must complete 36 credit points as listed in the relevant BMusic minor enrolment pattern.
CMPN1220 Foundations of Digital Music and Media

Foundations of Digital Music will provide students with a broad understanding of the theoretical concepts of digital music. The unit includes a historical overview in the development of sound-based composition and creativity from its initial beginnings with the advent of sound recording through to the emergence of computer-based applications to create and organise sounds in time and space. The unit will focus on the approaches taken over the last century to record, transform and organise sound in a variety of creative contexts, ranging from early electroacoustic music experiments, through to contemporary electronic music production. Repertoire from the vast field of sonic arts will be covered to offer a new perspective on audio and sound production in today's contemporary music scene.

Digital Composition units of study support the sustained development of compositional craft and creativity through the practical integration of music technology and digital music techniques in the preparation of sound based compositions to be submitted throughout the semester. The unit will focus on the approaches taken over the last century to record, transform and organise sound in a variety of creative contexts, ranging from early electroacoustic music experiments, through to contemporary electronic music production.
CMPN2222 Digital Composition 2

Digital Composition units of study support the sustained development of compositional craft and creativity through the practical integration of music technology and digital music techniques in the preparation of sound based compositions to be submitted throughout the semester. This unit will introduce students to historical and current modular synthesis techniques and the use of computers to generate and synthesise sounds. Students will investigate a range of compositional approaches associated with different styles of digital music and apply these to their own work throughout Semester.

Digital Composition units of study support the sustained development of compositional craft and creativity through the practical integration of music technology and digital music techniques in the preparation of sound based compositions to be submitted throughout the semester. The unit will focus on electronic music production techniques taken in the music industry today to create music for games, film scoring and other sound design for interactive and network media applications.
CMPN4607 Composition 7
Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Dr Daniel Rojas Session: Semester 1,Semester 2 Classes: Individual lessons (45mins), weekly Composition Seminar, Supplementary Classes Prerequisites Prerequisites: CMPN3606 Assessment: Submission of a portfolio of compositions, with accompanying recordings, of a suggested duration between 6-12 minutes (80%); application and engagement (20%) Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) day
Note: Students should own a professional music notation program (e.g. Sibelius, Finale, Dorico) and if relevant, a DAW (e.g. Audacity, GarageBand, Logic, ProTools, Ableton).
Principal Study Composition supports the sustained development of compositional craft and creative voice through the preparation of composition(s) to be submitted at the end of each semester. Via one to one lessons, attendance at weekly Composition Seminars and Supplementary Classes, students are expected to progressively advance through Composition 5 to 8. Weekly Composition Seminars provide a forum for expert guests to present specialised knowledge. Supplementary Classes are delivered by the various members of our composition staff, and deal with a variety of topics related to craft, creativity, repertoire, workflow, technology and career. By the conclusion of the degree, students will have demonstrated a very high level of compositional ability, research capacity and notation/production skills.
