A focus of this year will be the oral biofilm including specific periodontal pathogens, mechanical and chemical biofilm control as well as modifying/risk factors (i.e. behavioral/life style factors, endodontic factors, occlusal factors, inflammation, immunology) and wound healing. Towards the end of the year, the students will be introduced to the basic techniques and materials of periodontal surgery. Regular journal clubs, seminars and workshops are held to critically evaluate the current literature and gain the theoretical background required. The Research unit of study provides students with exposure to scientific methods by carrying out a research project. Students will learn to develop a research question, set out aims and hypotheses of the intended research project and review the important relevant literature. The student will develop a timeline for the research, complete a Research Data Management Plan (RDMP) and to commence ethics or other institutional biosafety approval if required. Candidates will work on a specified research project under appropriate supervision. At least one of the project supervisors must be an academic staff member of the University. The treatise is a formal piece of writing relevant to the subject area of the degree. The research treatise can be submitted up to one year after completion of the formal clinical studies of the DClinDent program only (within 4 years of commencement of the DClinDent course, subject to any intervening deferment or suspension period).

Students undertake clinical care of patients at Sydney Dental Hospital and the Westmead Centre for Oral Health, Westmead under supervision. Experience is gained in diagnosis, treatment planning; prognosis and in non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy. Regular case presentations are utilized for students to present cases for discussion. The focus of the 2nd year is on non-surgical treatment of more advanced and complex (Stage 3/4 ; Grade B/C) forms of periodontitis as well as on gaining experience in periodontal, implant and peri-implantitis surgery.

This course consists of intensive training in the surgical techniques of implant placement in routine and complex/compromised cases and the surgical preparation of deficient implant sites. It also emphasizes the development of skills for the students in treatment planning complex reconstruction cases including the use of computerized tomography as well as scanning and computer-assisted surgical implant planning. Clinical skills in the management of surgical complications will also be developed. The focus in 2nd year is on gaining experience in implant surgery. Contemporary issues, controversies in implantology will be covered in a series of seminars. Regular journal clubs, seminars and workshops are held to critically evaluate the current literature and gain the theoretical background required. The course also covers the role of host risk factors in patients susceptible to periodontal diseases and in treatment selection and outcomes.
