Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Science) and Bachelor of Science

This combined degree offers students a secondary-school teaching qualification in science; science and geography; or science and mathematics. The two degrees are completed in five years with the possibility of withdrawal to complete a Bachelor of Science only; after Year 1 some units of study may not gain full credit to the Bachelor of Science. The course covers professional teaching, special education, international education, and information and communications technology. School observation and practice teaching are integral components of the professional experiences in this degree.

All students must complete a first teaching area from the below subjects:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Geography
  • Earth and Environmental Science (EES)

A second teaching area can be taken from the following:

  • Biology*
  • Chemistry*
  • Geography**
  • Mathematics**
  • Physics*
  • Earth and Environmental Science (EES)

Students who wish to teach science exclusively must complete a major in one science; and a minor in a second science discipline.

*Students who want to teach science must include at least one year of Chemistry or Physics in their degree.

**Students who want to teach Geography and Mathematics do not need to include one year of Chemistry or Physics in their degree.

Requirements and Degree structure

Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Science) and Bachelor of Science

To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Science) and Bachelor of Science degree, students must complete 240 credit points in total, comprising:

  • A total of 66 credit points Curriculum and Professional Studies units;
  • A total of 36 credit points of teaching area units;
  • 12 credit points of Education One units;
  • 12 credit points of 1000-level units of study in a first Science teaching area;
  • 12 credit points of 1000-level units of study in a second Science teaching area;
  • 12 credit points of Mathematics degree core units of study, chosen from;
  • 12 credit points of Education Two units;
  • 12 credit points of 2000-level units of study in a first Science teaching area;
  • 12 credit points of 2000-level units of study in a second Science teaching area;
  • 12 credit points of 3000-level units of study in a first Science teaching area;
  • up to 24 credit points of 3000-level units of study in a first teaching area;
  • 6 credit points of Education Three Optional units;
  • 12 credit points of 3000-level units of study in a Science second teaching area or 12 credit points of elective units of study from Table A Subject Areas;
  • 12 credit points of study from the Open Learning Environment as listed in Table O.

Teaching areas

A teaching area is an area of study in which a student can specialise and graduate to teach in a school setting.

First teaching area
First teaching areas are 48 credit points from the related major and 18 credit points of related Curriculum units.

Second teaching area*
Second teaching areas are made up of at least 24 credit points from the related minor and 18 credit points of related Curriculum units.

*Students can complete the requirements for a minor in their second teaching area by completing an additional 12 credit points, ie 36 credit points total in the subject area.

Dalyell stream

The Dalyell stream is a targeted stream for high achievers. Students who participate in the Dalyell stream are known as the ‘Dalyell Scholars’. As a Dalyell Scholar students will have access to curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Dalyell Scholars must take 12 credit points of Dalyell stream units in addition to their degree requirements.

Dalyell stream units emphasise the development of vision, depth of understanding, adaptability, breadth of perspective, societal contribution and a high level of capability in operating across disciplinary and cultural boundaries. Dalyell Scholars may take Dalyell stream units offered by any faculty.

Additionally with the permission of the Dalyell Program Director, students will have access to enrichment and accelerated units of study that can be competed as electives.

Honours

Education Honours is an integrated program undertaken during the final three semesters of an undergraduate degree. It consists of two enrolled units Education Honours Preliminary and Education Honours dissertation.

Table O - Open Learning Environment (OLE)

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Science) and Bachelor of Science are required to complete at least 12 credit points in units of study from the Open Learning Environment (OLE) to meet the requirements for their degree/s.

Electives

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Science) and Bachelor of Science can complete elective units of study from the subject areas listed in Table A (Arts and Social Sciences) and Table S (shared pool).
