Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Advanced Studies (International and Global Studies)

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (International and Global Studies) is a unique course of study equips you with the ability to work in a global society. Its core major enables you to relate local and global trends, while your chosen specialisation and language training provide the regional expertise and linguistic competence to work in organisations with an international scope, and to communicate effectively across cultural and linguistic boundaries.

You will:

• complete a core program in International and Global Studies, including advanced coursework and a substantial final-year project
• undertake a modern language minor
• complete a second major (which may be an extension of the language minor)
• study abroad at one of our leading partner universities to diversify your study and provide first-hand international experience

Degree structure and Requirements

Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (International and Global Studies)

Major and program

In the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (International and Global Studies) students must select a 72 credit point program of International and Global Studies offered by the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry to fulfil the requirements of their degree.

Students must complete a 36 credit point minor* in one of the below language subject areas:

• Arabic Language and Cultures
• Chinese Studies
• French and Francophone Studies
• Germanic Studies
• Hebrew (Modern)
• Indonesian Studies
• Italian Studies
• Japanese Studies
• Korean Studies
• Modern Greek
• Spanish and Latin American Studies

*The minor chosen can also be converted into a major leaving more room for elective space in the degree.

If the language minor is not chosen to be converted to a 48 credit point major, students must also complete a second major from the Table A Subject Areas or Table S.

Exchange requirements

You can study anything on exchange that will count towards your degree however approval is required. Before deciding on a partner institution to apply to, it is worthwhile researching the units that are on offer, and considering how those units will fit with your degree structure.

Elective units of study will supply you with the maximum flexibility around what you will be eligible to study whilst on exchange.

Please note however that you should always plan to complete your INGS core units at Sydney, as it is very unlikely you will be able to find an alternate unit at another university that is sufficiently similar in content.

Ensure you plan your exchange in first or second year, it is recommended to take exchange in your 4th year semester 1. If you are planning on doing honours please contact your degree director regarding timing and a suitable study plan.

Steps to going on exchange:

1. Attend an information session with Study Abroad
2. Locate the best time to go on exchange (exchange is recommended in your 4th year Semester 1) and organise your units of study accordingly.
3. Apply for exchange before the deadline with Global Mobility. You’ll need to apply a year in advance for semester exchange programs.
4. Obtain approval from your faculty for the units of study you intend to take overseas.
5. Once approved enjoy all that exchange has to offer you!

The best starting point is to attend an information session where they will explain to you any required actions to having your exchange experience run as smoothly as possible.

Honours

The International and Global Studies Honours program provides a capstone year of study for students with research ambitions in International and Global Studies. It is an intensive program of advanced coursework and individual research focused on your research project. An Honours year prepares you to undertake a research higher degree or enter the workforce with higher-level skills, and is thus the first step to careers as professional researchers and academics. In addition to a fourth-year unit taken by all INGS students, you enroll in one specialist Honours seminar plus write a 18,000–20,000-word thesis on a topic of your choice. The thesis is a substantial piece of writing that allows you to engage in independent research under the supervision of a FASS staff member, who provides feedback and guidance. The thesis refines your research, analytical and writing skills; it extends your intellectual range, and develops personal and professional attributes needed to complete a major project. These skills and attributes in research, analysis, argumentation and writing will benefit you in your career path. The Honours seminar will prepare you in research methods and thesis writing.

If you commenced your degree in 2018 or later: Admission to Honours is via the Bachelor of Advanced studies and requires a major in Global Studies with an average of 70 percent or above.

Prior to commencing Honours, you will need to ensure you have completed all other requirements of the Bachelor of Arts (International and Global Studies), including program requirements, Open Learning Environment (OLE) units and a second major.

Dalyell stream

The Dalyell stream is a targeted stream for high achievers. Students who participate in the Dalyell stream are known as the ‘Dalyell Scholars’. As a Dalyell Scholar students will have access to curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Dalyell Scholars must take 12 credit points of Dalyell stream units in addition to their degree requirements.

Dalyell stream units emphasise the development of vision, depth of understanding, adaptability, breadth of perspective, societal contribution and a high level of capability in operating across disciplinary and cultural boundaries. Dalyell Scholars may take Dalyell stream units offered by any faculty.

Additionally with the permission of the Dalyell Program Director, students will have access to enrichment and accelerated units of study that can be competed as electives.

Table O - Open Learning Environment (OLE)

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (International and Global Studies) are required to complete at least 12 credit points in units of study from the Open Learning Environment (OLE) to meet the requirements for their degree/s.

Table S - Interdisciplinary Studies (Shared pool)

Students enrolled in Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (International and Global Studies can choose to complete a second major in a wide range of subject areas offered by the University of Sydney through the shared pool of majors and minors.

The available subject areas for majors and minors and their requirements can be found in the Interdisciplinary Studies Handbook.

The following areas offer majors and minors in this shared pool:

• Engineering and Information Technologies
• Health, Medicine and Dentistry
• Music; and
• Science, Agriculture, Environment and Veterinary Science.

Electives

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (International and Global Studies) can complete elective units of study from the subject areas listed in Table A (Arts and Social Sciences) and Table S (shared pool).

Commencing in Semester 2

Semester 2 admissions in the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (International and Global Studies) will need to note the following variations to their degree structure.

• Due to the sequential structure of language study, students will have the option to complete a short term study abroad or exchange in between semesters, or may have to complete language units of study whilst on study abroad/exchange.
• For students who wish to undertake a semester-long exchange, it may be necessary to obtain special permission for a 2000-level and 3000-level INGS core unit to be taken concurrently in the fourth semester of the degree.

We recommend that students commencing in Semester 2 seek degree planning advice from the Degree director.
