Students may select from all postgraduate units of study offered in the Faculty of Veterinary Science, subject to the availability of supervisors in some areas or the meeting of prerequisites. Students completing a stream must select units of study from their designated stream, in consultation with their academic supervisor.
The course is offered on campus or may be taken by distance with interactive online classrooms. Some units of study are offered face to face – in classroom/tutorial/laboratory format. Many of these units of study are conducted at the Camden Campus, and students must be prepared to travel to or live at this campus at various times during their candidature.
Some units of study are supervised, practical units. Students must arrange supervision for these units, in consultation with academic staff, before enrolling in them.
Students will generally complete a generic degree by undertaking whichever units of study best suit their learning goals.
Students who complete the Master of Veterinary Studies will be required to complete either case report(s) or research to the value of 24 credit points.
International students who are based in Australia on a student visa are permitted to take a maximum of 25% of their units in online study in their master's program. This would equate to 18 credit points in a 72 credit point program.
A candidate should first decide on their primary mode of study (distance, on campus or supervised) and indicate their preferred units of study in consultation with faculty staff.
Based on the type of units of study selected, a candidate without a stream will be allocated an academic supervisor for their program . A candidate must complete all requirements for the award as outlined in the course rules.

Providing candidates satisfy the admission requirements for each stage, a candidate may progress to the award of any of the courses in this sequence. Only the longest award completed will be conferred.

Completion of a stream is not a requirement of the course. A stream requires the completion of all the units of study listed in the table for that stream. The stream available is Small Animal Clinical Studies.

Only students employed in one of the University of Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospitals are eligible to undertake this stream.

Available places will be offered to qualified applicants based on merit, according to the following admissions criteria.

Admission to candidature for the Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Studies requires:
(a)
a bachelor's degree or higher award from the University of Sydney, or equivalent qualification, in veterinary science or animal science.
(b)
in exceptional circumstances the Dean may admit applicants without these qualifications who, in the opinion of the faculty, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.
(3)
Admission to the candidature for the Graduate Diploma in Veterinary Studies requires:
(a)
a bachelor's degree or higher award from the University of Sydney, or equivalent qualification, in veterinary science or animal science; or
(b)
completion of the requirements of an embedded graduate certificate in this discipline from the University of Sydney, or equivalent qualification.
(4)
Admission to the candidature for the Master in Veterinary Studies requires:
(a)
a bachelor's degree or higher award such as a master's degree from the University of Sydney, or equivalent qualification, in veterinary science, animal science, biological science or agriculture; or
(b)
completion of the requirements of an embedded graduate certificate or graduate diploma in this discipline from the University of Sydney, or equivalent qualification.

All applicants must submit a statement regarding their intended study path and career plans with their application after consulting with academic supervisors. Applicants whose study plan indicates primarily clinical training will be advised if a veterinary qualification registrable in New South Wales is a requirement of admission.

The units of study that may be taken for the courses are set out in Postgraduate Coursework table of units of study. Candidates select their subjects from anywhere in this table in consultation with an Academic Supervisor.
(2)
To qualify for the award of the Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Studies a candidate must complete 24 credit points of units of study selected from the postgraduate Table of units (there are no core units of study).
(3)
To qualify for the award of the Graduate Diploma in Veterinary Studies a candidate must complete 48 credit points of units of study selected from the postgraduate table of units (there are no core units of study) including from units offered by other faculties.
(4)
Candidates offered direct admission to the Graduate Diploma in Veterinary Studies might be eligible for a reduction in the volume of learning of up to 12 credit points as:
(a)
the maximum permissible reduction in the volume of learning is 12 credit points for a qualification at level 8 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (such as a bachelors degree with honours, or equivalent) or relevant professional experience in the veterinary or animal sciences, as approved by the Faculty.
(5)
To qualify for the award of the Master of Veterinary Studies a candidate must complete 72 credit points, including:
(a)
a minimum of 48 credit points of coursework units of study; and
(b)
a minimum of 24 credit points of case report or research project units of study.
(6)
Candidates offered direct admission to the Masters in Veterinary Studies might be eligible for a reduction in the volume of learning of up to 24 credit points as the maximum permissible reduction in the volume of learning is 24 credit points for a qualification at level 8 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (such as a bachelors degree with honours, or equivalent) or relevant professional experience in the veterinary or animal sciences, as approved by the Faculty.

A candidate for the master's degree or graduate diploma may elect to discontinue study and graduate with a shorter award from this embedded sequence, with the approval of the Dean, and provided the requirements of the shorter award have been met.

These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January, 2015 and students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January, 2011 who elect to proceed under these resolutions.
(2)
Candidates who commenced prior to 1 January, 2011 may complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement, provided that requirements are completed by 1 January, 2016. The Faculty may specify a later date for completion or specify alternative requirements for completion of candidatures that extend beyond this time.
