This unit focuses on practical skills for researchers trained in cultural studies, gender studies, and closely aligned disciplines, but who may not necessarily aim for academic postgraduate destinations. It includes workshops focused on foundational principles and practical skills that explicitly cross the academic/non-academic divide, training more flexible graduates. Workshops cover funding applications; oral presentations; supervision, reporting and feedback; writing and publishing; and job applications.

This unit focuses on the skills needed for undertaking engaged research in cultural studies, gender studies and aligned disciplines. It focuses on partnering with communities to undertake research and the application of research skills beyond exclusively academic contexts. Workshops cover: adapting your research cv for different contexts; working within the cultural sector and with community groups and NGOs; research translation and writing for broader audiences; and writing funding applications in support of cultural and community activities and research.

No previous knowledge of any foreign language is assumed and all grammatical concepts encountered will be explained. It concentrates on additional morphology, reading skills and the syntax of the sentence, while also introducing further grammatical concepts and constructions. Grammatical knowledge is reinforced by translation from and into Greek, while reading skills are further consolidated through the study of selected extracts from Greek prose and/or verse texts.

The aim of this unit is to provide postgraduate students with a foundation for the Classical Hebrew language. It caters for postgraduate students in the Ancient World Studies program and others pursuing disciplines for which a knowledge of Classical Hebrew is valuable or indispensable. The unit uses Biblical Hebrew texts and grammatical exercises to teach grammar and the principles of translation which are the essential prerequisites for study of related cultural, social and historical issues.

Holocaust and genocide museums and memorials continue to grow in number and appeal. This unit tracks their evolution as a genre, the theoretical and political debates that have accompanied their development and their increasingly influential public and political roles. We examine both purpose-built institutions and those developed at former sites of mass murder, reflecting on how these sites of trauma both shape our understanding of past events and contribute to contemporary debates concerned with genocide prevention and other related issues.

This unit will demonstrate how the evolution of Australian Jewry has been visualised in various museums run by the Jewish community, local communities in country areas and national museums. It will analyse government policies toward Jewish refugees before and after the Holocaust, and other key issues. It will also discuss how ethnic museums can contribute to Australia's broader multicultural history.

This seminar provides an overview of qualitative research methods for postgraduate students in the beginning stages of their research projects in languages and cultures. The unit will cover qualitative methods basics, including research question design, case selections, strategies for methods such as observation, interview, surveys, and focus groups. It will also introduce related writing strategies and structures as well as ethical dimensions. Throughout, the intercultural and cross-cultural aspects of students' projects will be critically engaged.
