Overview
The Discipline of General Practice at the Sydney Medical School’s Master of Medicine and Master of Science in Medicine (General Practice and Primary Health Care) commences in 2019. The Master of Medicine is designed for general practitioners, doctors training for general practice and those thinking of a career in primary health care. The Master of Science in Medicine is designed for allied health professionals, nurses and pharmacists who work in primary health care.
To meet the diverse needs of practitioners in general practice and primary health care the course structure will allow students to select from a wide range of units of study, such as complex problems in primary care, dermatology, diabetes and metabolic health, paediatrics, internal medicine sub-specialties, mental health, public health and clinical teaching.
You will advance your clinical knowledge and practice in areas of interest, as well as develop expertise in other areas important to primary health care and general practice. The basic stream-specific units are aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills required of practising GPs, GP trainees and primary health care practitioners, while the advanced units offer greater depth in these areas of study. There are a broad range of elective units which include clinical topics such as paediatrics, pain management and sexual health; skills units such as clinical reasoning, medical education, and statistical analysis; amongst others. The program will also provide an opportunity to carry out a supervised research project and prepare a paper for publication via the Advanced Master’s option from 2020.
You will benefit from the opportunity to interact with other clinicians, share knowledge and skills in a supportive environment, and make key contacts with Australia’s primary health care leaders. The predominantly online nature of the course means that you can continue your educational program working in suburban or rural areas, in fact, anywhere with internet access.
Candidates for the Master of Science in Medicine must show evidence of 12 months’ relevant work experience in primary health care. The combination of the Master level degree with full time employment means that you should allow a minimum of two years for completion of the degree and we expect that many students will take longer than this.
Course outcomes
The program aims to advance your clinical knowledge and practice in areas of interest, as well as develop expertise in other areas important to primary health care and general practice. It aims to provide you with a framework for: understanding and analysing health care systems and the interface with primary health care; describing the roles and responsibilities of the primary health practitioner for individuals, families and communities; considering the well-being of the health practitioner. The program will also equip you with knowledge and skills in clinical areas key to general practice and a framework in which to consider complex problems. The emphasis is on evidence based practice while providing guidance in areas where the evidence base is lacking or inconclusive.
Course Information
The program is designed and delivered by experienced specialist clinicians from primary health care and other specialties. In addition, the course is supported by research and teaching academics from across the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney to ensure expert, up to date coursework supported by research. The case-based learning ensures that the course is clinically relevant. All core unit of study learning materials are provided online.
