Master of Teaching
Coursework
The Master of Teaching program is designed to instil qualified students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the classroom and prepare them to thrive within various educational contexts. This program offers various streams designed to equip students with specialist knowledge, and qualify graduates for accreditation.
Master of Teaching (Early Childhood)
This Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) leads to a qualification as a teacher of children aged birth to five years, in pre-primary childcare and early-childhood-education settings. The curriculum integrates training for preservice teachers of infants, toddlers and preschool children. Incorporated into the two-year program of study is an examination of the vital relationships between early-childhood teachers, families, caregivers and the community.
Master of Teaching (Primary Education)
The curriculum of the MTeach (Primary) is designed to prepare students for teaching all subjects in the Primary K–6 syllabi in NSW. As well as learning about the policy frameworks that shape teaching in NSW, Australia and internationally, students attend coursework that covers teaching in multilingual classrooms (TESOL) and the Primary School Key Learning Areas of English, Mathematics, Science and technology, Human society and its environment (HSIE), Creative and practical arts, and Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE).
Master of Teaching (Counselling)
The Master of Teaching (Counselling) is designed to prepare students to become school counsellors or school psychologists while also qualifying as a teacher in one area of the secondary-school curriculum. The program trains school counsellors to work as psychologists in government and non-government schools across all sectors of the education community: primary, secondary and special education. To this end, all candidates undertake coursework and professional experiences in school counselling and one of the curriculum areas offered by the Sydney School of Education and Social Work.
Master of Teaching (Health and Physical Education)
The Master of Teaching (Health and Physical Education) is designed for graduates who have an appropriate undergraduate degree and want to teach Health and Physical Education in secondary schools. The program requires candidates to specialise in the teaching area of Health and Physical Education, and is studied as a "double method", which means candidates do not qualify in a second teaching area.
Master of Teaching (Secondary)
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) program qualifies students for accreditation as a secondary school teacher in at least one teaching area. The program focuses on coursework that addresses the various complexities of teaching in a high school classroom, dealing with students from diverse backgrounds and needs, and thriving within educational systems.
Awards and Requirements
To qualify for the award of Master of Teaching, candidates must complete 96 credit points worth of study, including all professional placements and internships, within at least two years.
