Coursework

The Master, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate of Development Studies provide a critical and multidisciplinary perspective on challenges in the achievement of sustainable solutions to poverty and deprivation in the developing world.

Units of study include core units (Development: Civil Society and Wellbeing; Development: Communication and Education; Rethinking Poverty, and Culture and Development: Key Concepts); capstone units (Development Collaboration, and Development Studies Dissertation A and B); core elective units (Development Project Evaluation; Culture and Politics of Health Development; Human Rights and International Development; Dynamics of Human Rights Violations); and elective units from a range of University of Sydney master's level programs.

Upon graduating, students will be in a strong position to seek employment in government, non-government and private sector organisations concerned with development and poverty alleviation. Development Studies students can use the skills and knowledge acquired in the programs to become more effective researchers, planners, educators, administrators and managers.

Research

There are currently no research degrees offered in Development Studies, but potential applicants are referred to the Anthropology section of the postgraduate handbook.

Awards and Requirements

Please refer to the degree resolutions in this Handbook for information on the specific admission requirements for different coursework award courses.

Graduate Certificate in Development Studies
To be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Development Studies, students must complete 24 credit points including:

• a minimum of 12 credit points of core units of study
• a maximum of 12 credit points from elective units of study

This award is only available on a part time basis to be completed in a minimum of 2 semesters.

Graduate Diploma in Development Studies
To be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Development Studies, students must complete 48 credit points including:

• 24 credit points of core units of study
• 6 credit points from core elective units of study
• 18 credit points from elective units of study

Master of Development Studies
To be awarded the Master of Development Studies, students must have completed 72 credit points including:

• a minimum of 24 credit points of core units of study
• a minimum of 6 credit points from core elective units of study
• a maximum of 30 credit points from elective units of study, which can include an optional specialisation (with the permission of the Degree Coordinator, a maximum of 12 credit points can be taken as elective units from units of study outside those listed in the Development Studies subject area of the Postgraduate Unit of Study table, including a maximum of 6 credit points from units of study offered by other faculties).
• a minimum of 6 credit points from capstone units of study

Candidates who have completed previous study in a relevant discipline may be eligible for a reduction in the requirements in accordance with the table below.
