This unit provides the foundations to advanced clinical training at the postgraduate level in clinical fixed and removable prosthodontics. The focus is on comprehensive understanding and delivery of complete and partial removable prostheses. In fixed prosthodontics, focus is on comprehensive preclinical procedures, case identification, diagnosis, multidisciplinary treatment planning and initial phase management. Candidates are required to plan and complete pre-treatment laboratory procedures using conventional and CAD CAM protocols.

The didactic programme compliments the clinical training and activities with evidence-based information on advanced restorative dentistry, fixed and removable prosthodontics. The first year focus is on aetiology and multidisciplinary diagnosis of dental disease as well as comprehensive treatment planning and sequencing with holistic patient centred management.

Research Methods in Dentistry is a postgraduate course designed to provide fundamental knowledge and skills in clinical research design and Evidence­Based Dentistry for students intending to undertake research at the Sydney Dental School. All course material is provided through eLearning via the University of Sydney's website. A detailed series of modules and resources are included in the study material. Students are required to complete one tutorial exercise/assignment each week and a final assignment at the end of the course.
Topics covered include introduction to Evidence­Based Dentistry, epidemiologic study design, and basic biostatistics. Considerable attention is paid to critical appraisal of journal articles which is an indispensable tool in the pursuit of clinical practice founded on Evidence­Based Dentistry. An introduction into conducting literature search, diagnostic test studies and systematic reviews is also provided.

Orofacial pain can be severely disabling and has unique aspects because of the importance of the orofacial region for communication, emotional expression and mastication. The purpose of this unit is to provide an in-depth understanding of orofacial pain mechanisms, symptomatology and management. Topics include orofacial pain classification and diagnosis and management strategies based on the biopsychosocial model of pain.

This unit provides advanced training at the postgraduate level in clinical prosthodontics. Students undertake advanced clinical care of patients under supervision. Development of skills in diagnosis, treatment planning; prognosis and management of advanced cases requiring multidisciplinary oral rehabilitative care. The focus of the 2nd year is on the diagnosis, prescription, planning and delivery of the initial phases, preprosthodontic surgical phases of straightforward and advanced cases generally requiring conformative occlusal prosthodontic rehabilitation.
