A focus of this year will be the oral biofilm including specific periodontal pathogens, mechanical and chemical biofilm control as well as modifying/risk factors (i.e. behavioral/life style factors, endodontic factors, occlusal factors, inflammation, immunology) and wound healing. Towards the end of the year, the students will be introduced to the basic techniques and materials of periodontal surgery. Research Methods in Dentistry is a postgraduate course designed to provide fundamental knowledge and skills in clinical research design and Evidence­Based Dentistry for students intending to undertake research at the Sydney Dental School. All course material is provided through eLearning via the University of Sydney's website. A detailed series of modules and resources are included in the study material. Students are required to complete one tutorial exercise/assignment each week and a final assignment at the end of the course.
Topics covered include introduction to Evidence­Based Dentistry, epidemiologic study design, and basic biostatistics. This unit provides the introduction to a research project, including the development of a research proposal, completing a research data management plan, conducting literature review, and commencing ethics and other institutional biosafety approval application if necessary.

Experience is gained in diagnosis, treatment planning; prognosis and in non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy. Regular case presentations are utilized for students to present cases for discussion. The focus of the 2nd year is on non-surgical treatment of more advanced and complex (Stage 3/4 ; Grade B/C) forms of periodontitis as well as on gaining experience in periodontal, implant and peri-implantitis surgery.

This course consists of intensive training in the surgical techniques of implant placement in routine and complex/compromised cases and the surgical preparation of deficient implant sites. It also emphasizes the development of skills for the students in treatment planning complex reconstruction cases including the use of computerized tomography as well as scanning and computer-assisted surgical implant planning. Clinical skills in the management of surgical complications will also be developed. The focus in 2nd year is on gaining experience in implant surgery. Contemporary issues, controversies in implantology will be covered in a series of seminars. Wound healing, basic surgical principles, pre-operative evaluation as well as soft and hard tissue management and post-operative care are included. The course also covers the role of host risk factors in patients susceptible to periodontal diseases and in treatment selection and outcomes.
