The Master of Education (Taronga Conservation Education) is a unique streamoffered through the exclusive educational alliance between Taronga Conservation Society Australia and The University of Sydney.
The modular course is designed to develop and support the careers of teaching professionals, education administrators, researchers and policymakers. Students will utilise current research including human responses to wild animals, curriculum design, pedagogy and assessment. The course also involves exploring research questions related to conservation education and evaluation.
Participants will be both practising teachers at all levels and professionals already working in wildlife and habitat conservation and the growing sustainability sector.
Classes will be held at the University of Sydney campuses and the new Taronga Institute of Science & Learning.
Awards and requirements
Master of Education (Taronga Conservation Education)
To qualify for the award of Master of Education (Taronga Conservation Education) candidates must complete 48 credit points, including:
- a minimum of 24 credit points from this stream, comprising;
- 18 credit points of core units of study developed and delivered at Taronga;
- 6 credit points of core units of study developed and delivered at The University of Sydney; plus - a maximum of 12 credit points of capstone units of study; and
- a maximum of 12 credit points of postgraduate Education elective units of study which can be chosen from any Master of Education program
Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Taronga Conservation Education)
To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Taronga Conservation Education) candidates must complete 36 credit points, including:
- 24 credit points of core units of study
- 12 credit points of postgraduate Education elective units of study which can be chosen from any Master of Education program
Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Taronga Conservation Education)
To qualify for the award of Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Taronga Conservation Education) candidates must complete 24 credit points, including:
- 24 credit points of core units of study
Outcomes
At the conclusion of this designated program students should be able to:
- Demonstrate deep understanding of conservation issues, behaviour change theories, conservation psychology and pedagogy for change through critical literature review and the design of educative experiences.
- Critically evaluate the success of strategies and communication channels used to promote conservation behaviour in diverse groups and across cultural boundaries.
- Identify opportunities to enhance professional practice and student learning outcomes through interdisciplinary relationships.
- Understand and apply effective communication strategies to express critical issues in conservation science.
- Work effectively in groups to analyse issues in conservation science and collaboratively devise solutions.
- Utilise theoretical knowledge to develop educative experiences that will effect positive change.
