MUSC2651 Sounding Australia
Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Prof Anne Boyd Session: Semester 1 Classes: 2 hour seminar/wk Prerequisites: 18 junior credit points Prohibitions: MCGY2614 Assumed knowledge: An ability to read music at a basic level and an understanding of fundamental musical terminology would be an advantage in this unit of study but is not essential. Assessment: One 3000 word essay, or individual creative project (such as a composition) (60%); a listening test (20%); 2 on-line quizzes (10%); attendance and participation (10%)

This unit of study looks at how Australian music reflects, and to some extent, shapes our national identity. How does Australia sound itself as a nation? What stories about ourselves does our music tell? What are the characteristics of Australian music that are different and unique? How does our music situate Australia in a globalised community? Some indigenous music as well as well as music by non-indigenous composers will be studied. Selected Asian traditions may be examined alongside works by Australian composers reflecting such influence. It is sometimes possible to offer limited instruction in Indonesian gamelan performance.

MUSC1601 Mathematical Modes of Music

Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Professor Richard Cohn Session:
Semester 2 Classes: 2 hour lecture and 1 hour tut/wk Assumed knowledge:

of musical rhythms, melodies, scales, and chords in a wide range of
repertory.

Europe: Literature and Dictatorship focuses on aspects of literature, culture, and the public sphere in the twentieth-century socialist states of Central and Eastern Europe. Literature played an important role - both clandestinely and as a public institution - under socialism. However literary texts cannot be separated from wider issues of politics, culture, and society. Hence attention will be paid to the role of the intelligentsias, to censorship, and to problems of dissidence and free expression in authoritarian, closed, and totalitarian societies.

EUST2004 Europe: Imagination and Social Change

This unit is missing from the 2015 handbook and is available in Semester 2, 2015.

Credit Points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Peter Morgan Sessions: Semester 2 Classes: 1x2-hr lecture-seminar/week, 1x1-hr tutorial/week Prerequisites: 12 junior credit points from Table A Assessment: 1x2500wd Essay (50%), 1x1000wd Assignment (30%), 1x1000wd voiced Powerpoint Presentation (20%) Delivery Mode: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) Day

Can the imagination can be a tool for social change? This idea has been influential in Europe since the origins of modernity. Since Thomas More’s Utopia, writers and thinkers have imagined ideal solutions to the problems of social and political change and to issues of religion and cultural difference, conflict and war. Paradoxically, the idea of Europe as a space of harmony and coexistence was strongest during times of crisis. In this unit we study the utopias and the speculative, ideal and exemplary worlds of the modern European imagination.

NUTM3002 Nutrition and Metabolism Advanced Concepts

Nutrition is a multidisciplinary science that covers the role of food in health and disease. Advances in biomolecular science have increased the focus of nutrition on the metabolic pathways that transform nutrients. This unit of study aims to explore recent advances in nutritional science and builds on the introductory concepts of nutrition and metabolism that were explored in NUTM3001. The focus will be the assessment of the biochemical reactions that take place in cells and the complexity of the interaction between human metabolic health and the environment in an interdisciplinary context. Students are provided a research training opportunity to contribute to our understanding of the relevant problems of over-nutrition in our society.  Collaborative research is supported by lectures and tutorials on nutrition science, ‘big data’ management strategies and approaches to data analysis.

Credit Points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Prof Clare Wade Session: Semester 2 Classes: lectures 3 hrs/wk, practicals 3hrs/wk Prerequisites: GENE2001 or MBLG2072 or MBLG2972 Assessment: practicals with associated reports and on-line quizzes (25%), mid-semester on-line examination (25%), final examination (50%) Mode of delivery: on-campus day

Description: The unit of Study explores in detail genetic aspects of commercial animal populations and investigates options for the practical application of genetics to improve animal productivity. It is designed to provide the background material, fundamental concepts and data analysis methods for breeding strategies in the animal industries. The unit of study develops basic principles of population and quantitative genetics from Agricultural Genetics. It provides essential background and context to the molecular principles expanded in Animal Biotechnology. Animal Genetics provides the justification for the application for advanced reproductive technologies presented in Animal Reproduction.
At the end of this Unit of Study, students will demonstrate an understanding of: the principles of population genetics and the concepts of relationship and inbreeding, and adverse effects of this inbreeding; the principles of quantitative genetics including the concepts of genetic variance, heritability and repeatability, and methods for the identification and selection of superior livestock; the use of multi-trait selection procedures to increase the overall economic value of populations of animals; the constraints to production gains using genetic selection programmes and advantages obtained through crossbreeding; the practical application of selection and crossing in animals; the application of genomic and reproductive technologies in Animal breeding. Introductory bioinformatics, genomics, cytogenetics and conservation biology will be covered.
