Logistics Management and Transport Management

This section outlines the combined Master of Logistics Management and Master of Transport Management coursework program offered by the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies in the by the University of Sydney Business School.

This program combines the Master of Logistics Management and the Master of Transport Management. Both degrees are studied concurrently and will be awarded after a minimum of two years of full-time study.

The Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies in the University of Sydney Business School is an Australian Key Centre of Excellence and a world class research institute with strong industry links and a key role in developing innovative ideas in logistics, supply chain and transportation policy and professional practice (sydney.edu.au/business/itls). Our programs focus on policy, strategic planning, and management and operations, developing specialist skills in: applying concepts, techniques and principles that underlie logistics, supply chain and transport management; understanding the relationships between business processes within and between organisations; using systems approaches to solve business problems; understanding the relationships between government agencies and the private sector in the provision, financing, operation and maintenance of transport networks; using contemporary modelling techniques and data collection processes to solve problems and managing the impacts of future trends in logistics, supply chain and transportation. Our programs are structured so that students can choose to focus on one key area of logistics and/or transport management: aviation management; infrastructure management; supply chain management; ports and maritime logistics; or transport planning and management. We provide our students with connections to industry through practical case studies, presentations from logistics and transport professionals, site visits and the opportunity to undertake work placements with our industry partners.

Degree structure

To be awarded the Master of Logistics Management and Master of Transport Management, students complete 16 units of study (96 credit points), comprising:

• eleven logistics management and transport management core units of study (66 credit points)
• five logistics management and transport management elective units of study (30 credit points).

Core units of study

(i) Foundation

Students must complete the following foundation units of study (18 credit points):

• ITLS5000 Foundations of Supply Chain Management (must be completed in first semester of study)#
• ITLS5100 Transport & Infrastructure Foundations (must be completed in first semester of study)
• ITLS5200 Quantitative Logistics & Transport

# Students demonstrating extensive practical experience in the logistics industry may apply to substitute an alternative logistics management unit of study for ITLS5000 Foundations of Supply Chain Management. Students should send their resume with a covering email outlining their experience to the Postgraduate Coordinator for Logistics Management, Dr Jyotirmoyee Bhattacharjya (jyotirmoyee.bhattacharjya@sydney.edu.au).


(ii) Advanced

Students must complete all of the following advanced units of study (36 credit points):

• ITLS6001 Value Chain Costing
• ITLS6002 Supply Chain Planning Systems
• ITLS6003 Contemporary Procurement
• ITLS6004 Warehouse & Inventory Management
• ITLS6100 Logistics & Transport Economics
• ITLS6101 Global Freight Logistics Management.

(iii) Capstone

Students in the Master’s degree must complete the two capstone units of study (12 credit points) in their final semester of study:

Progression guide

The following table illustrates an example degree progression for a student enrolled in the Master of Logistics Management and Master of Transport Management on a full-time basis undertaking four units of study (24 credit points) per semester, completing in two years.
