Master of Nursing (Honours)

*Please note: This degree is in the process of being revised and may not be offered in the following format from 2012. Pending University approval, it is anticipated that a similar program will be available from 2012.

The Master of Nursing (Honours) provides a pathway for students holding a Master of Nursing to undertake research training. This option may be chosen by clinicians with an interest in research to develop a detailed proposal and literature review for higher degree study, or to conduct an in-depth inquiry into a topic of professional relevance.

Admission requirements

Applicants for the Master of Nursing (Honours) course are accepted on the basis of previous qualifications and experience, as well as on the nature and scope of the intended research project and its relevance to nursing and midwifery. The admission requirements include:

  • an appropriate master's degree with a credit average or above, or qualifications deemed by the Dean to be equivalent
  • registration to practise as a nurse or midwife in Australia (or in the applicant€™s country of origin)
  • a minimum of one year's relevant post-registration experience as a registered nurse or midwife

Students intending to apply for candidature must submit a 3-4 page research proposal with their application.

Workload

This degree may be undertaken either full-time (one semester) or part-time (two semesters).

The Master of Nursing (Honours) is a research-based degree assessed by the examination of a thesis. During candidature students work closely with their supervisors who must be consulted regularly about the general design, planning and conduct of the research and the preparation of a thesis of approximately 20,000 words.

Because the Master of Nursing (Honours) is a thesis-based research degree, there are no specific coursework units. However, a supervisor may recommend that a student undertake an approved unit of study to support the development of research skills.

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the three-day research workshops in Semesters 1 and 2, and to attend Sydney Nursing School€™s Research Week. Students will have the opportunity to present their work to colleagues and peers at a research forum and to develop and refine their work through this process.
