Course overview

For graduates without a major in psychology, the Graduate Diploma in Psychology opens the doors to the discipline. Whether you want to gain registration as a practicing professional or pursue further studies, this course will help you to start on the path to becoming a psychologist. As a part of this course, you will study areas of experimental psychology, abnormal psychology, statistical methods in psychology, and a range of other topics that are included in our accredited Psychology Program.

Course outcomes

Upon completion of the course, graduates will have completed a Psychology Program accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), equivalent to that available in our other APAC accredited degrees.
Students who successfully complete the GDP will be eligible to apply for a place in fourth year Psychology (Honours). Following completion of 4th year Psychology (Honours), graduates may apply to study for a higher degree in psychology.

Exemptions and Advanced Standing

Students may apply for exemptions if they have already completed studies which the faculty deems equivalent to those in the program. Such units of study must have been completed within the previous 10 years. The number of exemptions allowed will not exceed Faculty of Science regulations or will not exceed 30 credit points, whichever is the lower.

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2014, the Resolutions of the Faculty, the University of Sydney (Student Appeals against Academic Decisions) Rule 2006 (as amended), the Academic Honesty in Coursework Policy 2015 and the Academic Honesty Procedures 2016. 2 Attendance pattern

The attendance pattern for this course is part-time only but full-time enrolment may be permitted after the first semester of candidature.

3 Admission to candidature

(1)
With approval from the Dean, available places will be offered to qualified applicants based on merit according to the following admissions criteria:

Admission to the course requires:
(a)
a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Economic and Social Sciences, Bachelor of Arts and Sciences, or Bachelor of Liberal Studies from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification, provided the applicant has not previously completed a major in Psychology; and
(b)
completion of 12 credit points of 1000-level units of study in Psychology or equivalent within the last ten years.

4 Requirements for award

(1)
The units of study that may be taken for these awards are set out in the Graduate Diploma in Psychology table.
(2)
To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Psychology a candidate must complete 60 credit points, including:
(a)
24 credit points of 2000-level units of study in Psychology; and
(b)
24 credit points of 3000-level units of study in Psychology; and
(c)
12 credit points of 39XX or 4000-level units of study in Psychology.

5 Credit for previous study

Credit for up to 30 credit points may be granted for units of study deemed to be equivalent to units in the Graduate Diploma in Psychology offered by the Faculty of Science.

6 Transitional provisions

(1)
These resolutions apply to persons who commenced their candidature after 1 January, 2019 and persons who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January, 2019 who elect to proceed under these resolutions.
(2)
Candidates who commenced prior to 1 January, 2019 may complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement, provided that requirements are completed by 1 January, 2022, or later date as the faculty may, in special circumstances, approve. Candidates who commenced prior to 1 January, 2017 may complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement, provided that requirements are completed by 1 January, 2022, or later date as the faculty may, in special circumstances, approve.
