Education (Secondary: Science) and Science

About the degree

This combined degree offers students a secondary-school teaching qualification in science; science and geography; or science and mathematics. The two degrees are completed in five years with the possibility of withdrawal to complete a Bachelor of Science only; after Year 1 some units of study may not gain full credit to the Bachelor of Science. The course covers professional teaching, special education, international education, and information and communications technology. School observation and practice teaching are integral components of the professional experiences in this degree.

All students must complete a major in one teaching science area, such as biology, chemistry, physics, or geography and a minor in a second teaching area. Students who wish to teach science exclusively must complete a major in one science; and a minor in a second science discipline. Students who want to teach science must include at least one year of Chemistry or Physics in their degree.

These conditions do not apply for students who want to teach Geography and Mathematics.

Requirements for completion

In order to complete this combined degree, students must complete 240cp as described in the unit of study table.

First year

In the first year, students begin the discipline studies for both Science and Education. In Education, students will be introduced to teaching and learning as well as human development in children and adolescents. Students will begin their studies in their first teaching area as well as first year mathematics. Students will complete first year Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

These requirements do not apply for students who are planning to major in Geography and have Mathematics as a second teaching area.

Second year

In the second year, students are expected to continue their discipline studies in the second year. Students will continue their learning in Education looking at psychology and social perspectives in this field. Students will also be introduce to problems that can arise with diversity and literacy in the classroom. Pedagogical practices will begin to be developed with identifying best teaching practices.

Third year

In the third year, students will be introduced to pedagogical practices in both of their teaching areas. Their studies in Science will continue towards completing their chosen major. Students will also be introduced to Information Technology in schools. This will prepare them for their first 20 days of Professional Experience.

Fourth year

In fourth year, students will continue developing their knowledge in general pedagogy as well as it relates to both their teaching areas. Students will begin their studies in Aboriginal and Special Education. Education research will also be introduced as it will be an integral part of evidence-based teaching. Students will also complete their second 25 days of Professional Experience.

Fifth year

In fifth and final year, students will have the opportunity to complete Science units of study that do not need to relate to their teaching areas. Students will explore further into education areas of interest relating to current sport educational issues, global perspectives, Australian schooling systems, creativity and artistry, aboriginal community, cultural diversity, diverse needs or teaching international English. Students will also complete their final internship with 35 days of in school experience.


Education Honours is an integrated program undertaken during the final three semesters of an undergraduate degree. It consists of two enrolled units Education Honours Preliminary and Education Honours dissertation.
