About the major
Celtic Studies is concerned with the academic study of the Celtic languages, past and present, and the culture and history of the Celts. This ethnic group has played a highly significant role in the development of European civilisation, particularly in the British Isles. Therefore, its culture forms a vital part of the cultural heritage of a large number of Australians.
The Celts may be defined as those peoples who speak or whose forebears have spoken a Celtic language. Early Celtic languages included Celtiberian and Gaulish in ancient continental Europe, Galatian in Asia Minor, as well as British, Goidelic and Pictish in the British Isles. Breton, Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh are the Celtic languages spoken today. The languages available in 2014 as part of the Celtic Studies program are Irish and Scottish Gaelic as well as Welsh; medieval and modern. All language units involve study of the literature in that language. Non-language units of study focus on Celtic culture, history and mythology.
The aim is to enable students who have developed an interest in various aspects of Celtic Studies to pursue a program of study that offers a representative range of subject areas.
Pathways through the major
A major in Celtic Studies requires 36 senior credit points, including 12 credit points of core units of study and 12 senior credit points from Celtic Language units of study, of which 6 must be at 3000 level.
The units of study for the major can be found in the unit of study table for Celtic Studies. The table shows units of study on offer in the current handbook year. You may find information regarding a full list of units of study available to the major on the departmental website.
Junior units of study (1000 level)
There are no junior units of study in Celtic Studies. You complete 18 junior credit points taken from any of the following subject areas: Arabic and Islamic Studies, Archaeology, English, French, Ancient Greek, German, Hebrew, History, Italian, Latin, Linguistics, Modern Greek, Sanskrit, or Spanish and Latin American Studies.
Senior units of study (2000 and 3000 level)
You complete at least 12 credit points taken from senior-intermediate (2000 level) units of study, including both core units of study; CLST2601 and CLST2605. In addition to the core units of study you may complete 18 senior credit points from elective units of study at either 2000 or 3000 level.
A major in Celtic Studies also requires completion of at least one pair of Celtic language units of study. Each pair includes one 2000 level and one 3000 level unit of study.
You must complete at least 12 credit points of Celtic Studies units of study at 2000 level before enrolling into 3000 level units.

Honours
Admission into Celtic Studies Honours, requires completion of 48 senior credit points including the requirements for the major and 12 additional credit points taken from the Celtic Studies Program.

Please note: from 2015 the minimum requirement for entry into Honours will increase to an average of 70% or above across 48 senior credit points in the intended subject area/s.
