The year will begin with the foundation of the medical sciences. This will include general Anatomy, general Histology, Infectious Diseases, Physiology, Immunology, general Pathology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Embryology and Genetics. Coinciding with these and continuing, there will be courses in Head and Neck Anatomy, Oral Embryology and Histology, Oral Microbiology and Biomaterials. Organ systems in health and disease will then begin including aspects of Skin and Mucosa, Musculoskeletal systems, Respiratory systems, Haematology and Cardiovascular systems. Oral Pathobiology, Dental Biochemistry and Oral Biology will also be introduced.

This unit introduces the student to Cariology and the disease of dental caries, covering natural history, causation, prevention, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, treatment and clinical management, patient management and the roles of professional and home care. Population Oral Health is also introduced and discusses the primary health care approach, society and health, water fluoridation, Aboriginal health, ethics and epidemiology. The study of Professional Practice will include professional behaviour, communication, body image, motivational interviewing, health behaviour change, oral health promotion skills and portfolio development. Aspects of clinical management will also be introduced, including, ergonomics, cross-infection, handling of instruments, the normal (healthy) appearance of tissues and structures; taking a patient history, extra and intra-oral clinical examinations, charting of findings and other patient record keeping.

Tooth morphology allows students to develop an understanding of the internal and external structure of primary and permanent teeth. It is also concerned with the development, eruption and exfoliation of teeth.
First year provides an introduction to the principles and concepts of Tooth Conservation, the early development of technical skills, an introduction to and use of the three principal restorative materials (glass ionomer cement, composite resin and dental amalgam), minimal intervention and preventive techniques. In addition the students will be introduced to management of the clinical loss of tooth structure, techniques for caries removal and the placement of Class V restorations and abrasion lesion restorations with glass ionomer cement, Class I, III and V restorations with composite resin and Class I and II restorations with amalgam in the simulation environment. The endodontic course will provide students with an understanding of anatomy, histology and physiology of the pulp-dentine complex, the aetiology of pulpal disease and the treatment thereof. Students will be introduced to endodontic materials and instruments, and techniques for endodontic management of anterior teeth in the simulation environment.

This unit of study provides an introductory framework to the diagnosis and rehabilitation of patients with tooth loss and diseases of the supporting tissues, namely periodontal diseases. Introductory laboratory and didactic sessions will provide student knowledge on the range of rehabilitation options available to replace lost teeth and bone, including partial and complete dentures and implants and the basic theory of dental occlusion. An introduction to the management of older patients and patients with special needs will also be included.

This unit of study will commence with the familiarization of students with the library, conducting literature searches and managing information. Students will then undertake an intensive course on Evidence-Based Practice and Research Methods. Students will gain skills in identifying different study types, critically appraising clinical research literature and assigning levels of evidence to published research. Students will apply EBP principles in developing patient care plans for simple clinical case scenarios.

This unit in Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics aims to provide a course of education that allows the graduate student to acquire a thorough understanding of the science of craniofacial biology and its relevance to the development of normal and abnormal craniofacial growth and development, and to the prevention, interception and correction of dentofacial abnormalities by orthodontic means. It aims to encourage the development of a theoretical basis for the ethical clinical practice of dentistry for children and adolescents through engagement with and critical analysis of the current body of literature.

Students will be introduced to primary care clinical practice and the management and treatment of patients with dental caries using non-invasive primary and secondary preventive strategies and the application of appropriate behavioural skills, in particular, motivational interviewing techniques. Within the context of clinical practice, students will experience working as members of a team and learn how team management is critical to achieving desired health outcomes both effectively and efficiently. This unit will build on Year 1 and further develop an understanding of anxiety, pain, phobias, anger and stress. Population Oral Health will be developed with topics such as the utilisation of dental services; health education; health promotion; oral care for prisoners; refugee services; community aspects of dental fluorosis; community aspects of dental trauma; the special needs patient; monitoring clinical services; and the limitations of western dentistry.

This unit of study will provide students with an understanding of pulpal and periapical disease and the treatment modalities that are needed to perform successful endodontic treatment. Clinical features, diagnostic and management principles for acute traumatic dental injuries will be introduced. Clinical aspects of Tooth Conservation will be commenced in this unit, starting with integrated treatment planning and patient treatment sessions. These will encompass the delivery of preventive care, the management of patients presenting in pain, the placement of provisional restorations, the preparation of simple cavities and the placement of composite resin, glass ionomer cement and amalgam restorations. During this unit the students will also undertake a preclinical course in the simulation environment to enhance their skills in the placement of posterior composite resins and complex amalgam restorations. This unit of study will also introduce the students to more complex aspects of endodontics and allow them to develop an understanding of the variety of endodontic treatment modalities that they can offer to their patients; as well as introducing them to the latest concepts in endodontics.

This unit builds on the fundamental concepts and procedures covered in year 1 to provide the important clinical procedures involved in denture construction prior to commencing clinical management of patients requiring simple partial dentures. Clinical management will advisedly emphasise preparation of the mouth (in particular oral health care to address dental caries, gingivitis and periodontal disease) before rehabilitation as fundamental to oral health management. The indications and contraindications for implants will be covered in this block as well as the basic technical and theoretical procedures involved in planning treatment with implants and the importance of the occlusion in prosthodontic reconstructions. This unit also provides students with more advanced information on the range of periodontal diseases and the fundamentals of diagnosis and management of periodontal disease. The complexity of factors in the management of aged patients and patients with disabilities will also be covered in more detail.

This unit familiarises students with the important aspects of orthodontic clinical sequences and basic clinical skills. It covers both basic theoretical and clinical orthodontic skills that are essential prior to undertaking patient treatment. The preclinical focus is a typodont simulation to manage aspects such as clinical set-up and basic clinical skills and observe orthodontic tooth movement and wire bending sessions to learn and practice hand bending of wires. The foundations of Pediatric Dentistry will be further developed in this unit to cover Trauma, Anomolies, Pathology, Fluorides and Behaviour Management.

This unit of study allows the integration of head and neck anatomy with the principles and procedures associated with routine dental and oral surgical procedures, as well as pain management. The learning content includes: the pharmacology and physiology of local anaesthetic agents and local anaesthesia; anatomy in relation to the administration of local anaesthetics and the principles of exodontia; assessment of a patient's medical and dental history, special investigations; absolute and relative contra-indications for local anaesthesia and exodontia; management of medical emergencies common to the dental practice, the concepts of antibiotic cover; assessing a radiograph and commenting on potential complications associated with exodontia; reducing patient anxiety; applying practical techniques for the safe administration of local anaesthetic solution and exodontia; the guidelines for 'universal precautions' and hospital infection control policy and appropriate management of a post-operative patient. Evidence-based practice is foundational to the program from this year.

Students will receive instruction on conducting a literature search for systematic reviews and be able to contrast these from traditional/narrative literature reviews. Students will also learn how to document and report a search, and use various indices of publication quality (impact factors, citation reports, H index). Students will learn how to summarize the critical appraisal of a journal article using a summary 'PICO sheet', and will use these sheets in clinical sessions.

Third Year Tooth Conservation provides students with the necessary skills to expand their treatment planning skills for patients in a general dental practice situation, and to undertake the management of patients presenting in pain. Students will build on their initial clinical experience by expanding the complexity of cavities and range of materials used in their treatment of patients. In addition students will learn how to manage a patient with concerns with respect to mercury, tooth lightening, quality of dental treatment, tooth coloured options including posterior composite resin restorations. The foundations of Endodontics will be deepened and broadened to include advanced concepts.

This unit of study will introduce students to the management of common denture-related problems frequently encountered in practice and includes repairs and reline procedures. More advanced rehabilitation procedures involving overdentures will also be introduced as well as the fundamental theoretical and technical framework for fixed prosthodontics. The crucial importance of the supporting soft and hard tissues in all prosthodontic rehabilitation will be emphasised by intensive exposure to diagnosis and management of common periodontal diseases with a focus on non-surgical periodontal therapy. These are integral to treatment planning. The application of the theoretical and practical procedures covered in this unit in the management of the elderly patient and the patient with special needs will be of particular importance in Yr 3.

This part of the course aims to provide the student with the practical application of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning of simple malocclusions and interceptive cases. Learning sessions aim to develop understanding of orthodontic appliances with practical knowledge of their operation and mode of action. As well, the indications, common problems and complications associated with various appliances are discussed. The student will become familiar with various types of orthodontic treatment available and gain practical experience in treatment as well as an overall knowledge of the process of comprehensive orthodontic treatment in the management of various malocclusions in different patient age groups. The learning sessions in Paediatric Dentistry will include restorative options (including Pulp Therapy), medically compromised patients, Syndromes and clefts, and caries.

The student will continue reviewing and treating patients in the primary care clinical practice using non-invasive primary and secondary preventive strategies. An intensive course in fixed prosthodontics and implants will deepen knowledge and skills, and students will participate in the treatment planning and management of patients requiring implant reconstructions. Treatment planning will emphasise integrated oral health management as an essential step in preparation of the oral environment for rehabilitation. Advanced therapy for periodontal defects, implant maintenance, occlusal-periodontal interrelationships will be expanded in this unit as fundamental to integrated oral rehabilitation. This unit of study is designed to further develop the skills and knowledge of students in the principles and practice of surgery, developed in year 3 of the program. Emphasis is placed on the technical aspects of the surgery as well as the integration of basic sciences. Students will be introduced to the hospital setting, including daily 'rounds', pre-op and post-op assessment of the surgical patient, as well as an extension of the Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology programs. Building on the discipline specific training and the integrated clinic sessions completed in earlier years, this unit of study will enhance the student's ability to integrate all aspects of patient care within the full range of teaching environments, including metropolitan and rural placements, as well as the main teaching centres of SDH and WCOH. This UoS will enhance the development of a clear understanding of the scope of specialist services available to patients in each of the disciplines. In light of this, students will understand their limitations in providing aspects of patient care and will know when and where to refer patients for more specialised treatment. Students will also become competent in integrating their knowledge in the treatment of medically compromised patients and be able to communicate effectively with a range of health practitioners to ensure the best possible standard of dental care.
