Bachelor of Nursing (Honours)

Eligible graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing are invited to apply for the honours program. This degree combines coursework units with research skills development for the conduct of an independent research project, leading to the submission and examination of a 10,000–15,000 word thesis. The coursework unit encompasses literature review, research methods and research ethics. Students are guided through the program by a primary supervisor and associate supervisor. Admission requirements

Applications to the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) are open to students who are considered by the faculty to have the requisite knowledge and aptitude to undertake the course. Applicants are expected to have completed their Bachelor of Nursing at credit level or above from the University of Sydney or hold an equivalent qualification.

Workload

The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) can be studied full time (one year) or part time (two years).

Students are required to attend on-campus study days for the coursework unit and are also strongly encouraged to participate in the research workshops in Semesters 1 and 2, and in Sydney Nursing School's Research Week. Students will have the opportunity to present their work to colleagues and peers at a School research forum.

Further study

Students who successfully gain first-class or second-class, Division 1 honours are eligible for entry into a PhD within Sydney Nursing School.

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2000 (the 'Coursework Rule', the Resolutions of the Faculty, the University of Sydney (Student Appeals against Academic Decisions) Rule 2006 (as amended) and the University policy on Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism.

2 Attendance pattern

The attendance pattern for this course is full time or part time according to candidate choice.

3 Admission to candidature

(1)
Availability of places is dependent on appropriate supervision being available within the faculty. Places will be offered to qualified applicants in the order in which complete applications are received, according to the following admission criteria.
(2)
Admission to the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) requires:
(a)
satisfaction of the English language proficiency requirements detailed in the faculty resolutions; and
(b)
completion of a Bachelor of Nursing pass degree at the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification with a minimum WAM of 65; and
(c)
current registration to practise nursing in Australia or another country.

4 Requirements for award

(1)
To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) degree candidates must complete 48 credit points comprising:
(a)
24 credit points of specified units of study; and
(b)
a 24 credit point thesis of 10,000 to 15,000 words.

5 Award of the degree

The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is awarded in the following classes ranging from First Class to Third Class:

Candidates for the award of the Honours degree who do not meet the requirements, but who have otherwised satisfied the course requirements, will be awarded the pass degree.

6 University medal

A student who receives an honours mark of 90 or above may be awarded a university medal. The medal is awarded at the discretion of the faculty to the highest achieving students who in the opinion of the faculty have an outstanding academic record, in accordance with the Coursework Rule.

7 Time limits

A candidate must complete all the requirements for the course within three calendar years of first enrolment, including periods of suspension.

8 Transitional provisions

(1)
These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January, 2011 and students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January, 2011 who elect to proceed under these resolutions.
(2)
Candidates who commenced prior to 1 January, 2011 may complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement, provided that the requirements are completed by 1 January, 2016. The Faculty may specify a later date for completion or specify alternative requirements for completion of candidatures that extend beyond this time.
