5. Stage 3 Streams
Stage 3 of the Medical Program is run as an integrated program. Students are allocated to one of four streams. In each stream, students complete 10 clinical blocks over the two-year period in one of four different sequences, as shown below. This equates to 96 credit points.

6. The MD Project
All students enrolled in the MD will be required to complete a research or capstone project known as the MD Project. Together with the Unit of Study in research methods (called MD Project Development), this aims to give students an understanding of the scientific processes of inquiry in medicine and related fields and an ability to draw on research-based information in whatever field of medicine they choose to practice. The MD Project provides hands-on experience for all students in developing a research project. For complex projects (e.g. a randomised controlled trial of a procedure), a comprehensive research proposal itself is the assessable endpoint. For smaller-scale projects (e.g. an analysis of cancer survival trends using routinely-collected data), students are expected to carry out the project and report on their findings. In either case, the MD Project should take the equivalent of eight weeks’ full-time work (320 hours) spread over two academic years.
At the beginning of Stage 2, students will be allocated to MD Project groups and research tutors through their clinical schools. The MD Project work begins early in Stage 2 and culminates with the submission of a written report and an oral presentation during the final block of Year 3 (Term E). Under the guidance of the research tutor, each MD Project group meets on a regular scheduled basis during Stage 2 and Stage 3 Year 3. The research tutor monitors the progress of each student in his or her MD Project group with reference to specified milestones that form the basis for a series of formative and summative assessments. Each student’s final written report is given to two other students who write peer reviews. The report and the related peer reviews are then assessed by an examiner (other than the research tutor).
