International Business and Commerce

This program combines the Master of International Business and the Master of Commerce. Both degrees are studied concurrently and will be awarded after a minimum of 2.5 years of full-time study.

Degree structure and progression

Degree requirements

To be awarded the Master of International Business and Master of Commerce, students complete 20 units (120 credit points), comprising:

(i) For the Master of Commerce component:

  • two core units of study (12 credit points) - one in the first semester of study and one in the final semester of the Commerce component of the combined degree
  • a maximum of three commerce foundational units of study (18 credit points) #
  • a specialisation selected from the 'Commerce specialisations' (excluding international business)
  • elective units of study selected from the units listed under the 'Commerce specialisations'.

# Graduates with a bachelor’s degree qualification in Commerce or Business may apply for waivers for foundational units.

(ii) For the Master of International Business component:

  • four core international business units of study (24 credit points)
  • four elective international business units of study (24 credit points)
  • an international business project comprising two units of study (12 credit points).

Commerce core units of study

Master of International Business and Master of Commerce students must complete both core units of study.

  • BUSS5000 Critical Thinking in Business (must be completed in the first semester of study) #
  • BUSS6000 Succeeding in Business (must be completed in the final semester of study for the Commerce component of the combined degree).

# Commencing Commerce students who wish to be considered for a waiver of BUSS5000 must complete a 60-minute invigilated test in one of two scheduled sessions to be held at The University of Sydney Business School in the week prior to semester commencement.

Commerce foundational units of study

Students complete a maximum of three foundational units (18 credit points) selected from the following lists.

(i) Foundational units offered by the University of Sydney Business School:

(ii) Foundational units offered by the School of Economics within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences:

Commerce specialisations

Students select their specialisation and/or electives from the following areas:

(i) Specialisations offered by the University of Sydney Business School:

Note: Students cannot complete a specialisation in 'International Business' for the Commerce component under this combined degree.

Note: In the combined Master of International Business and Master of Commerce, elective units studied for the international business component cannot be used to count towards a specialisation in the commerce component of the combined degree.

Progression guide

The Master of International Business and Master of Commerce will involve a minimum of five semesters (two and a half years). Students must complete a minimum of eight units of study in Commerce prior to commencing the core units in International Business. The International Business component of the program must be completed in a prescribed sequence, as detailed in the following tables, in order to facilitate progressive learning and enrich the group learning experience.

Note: In this example, 'MCom' refers to the 'Master of Commerce' and 'MIB' refers to the 'Master of International Business'.

The business project is designed to be completed towards the end of the program over a five to seven week period and will be offered in intensive mode during summer school, winter school and the first half of the following semester.

Master of International Business and Master of Commerce


These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2000 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Resolutions of the Faculty, the University of Sydney (Student Appeals against Academic Decisions) Rule 2006 (as amended) and the Academic Board policies on Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism.

2 Attendance pattern

The attendance pattern for this combined course is full time or part time according to candidate choice.

3 Master's type

This master's degree is a professional master's course, as defined by the Coursework Rule.

4 Admission to candidature

(1)
Available places will be offered to qualified applicants ranked on merit in accordance with the following criteria:
(a)
a bachelor's degree, graduate diploma, graduate certificate or equivalent at an institution approved by the Business School and graded at a standard acceptable to the Business School; and/or where applicable:
(b)
relevant work experience requirements as determined by the Business School;
(c)
satisfaction of the English language requirements; and
(d)
any other minimum standards specified by the School.

5 Requirements for award

(1)
The units of study that may be taken for the course are set out in the Table of postgraduate units of study: International Business and the Table of postgraduate units of study: Commerce.
(2)
To qualify for the award of the Master of International Business and Master of Commerce, a candidate must complete 120 credit points, including:
(a)
24 credit points of International Business core units of study; and
(b)
24 credit points of International Business elective units of study; and
(c)
a 12 credit point International Business project; and
(d)
12 credit points of Commerce core units of study; and
(e)
a maximum of 18 credit points of Commerce foundational units of study; and
(f)
a Commerce specialisation other than International Business; and
(g)
either a second Commerce specialisation; and/ or any additional elective units of study from the Commerce specialisations required to make 120 credit points in total.
(3)
In this combined degree, units completed for the Master of International Business component cannot be used to count towards a specialisation in the Master of Commerce component of this combined degree.

6 Specialisations

Completion of a specialisation is a requirement of the Master of Commerce. The specialisations available are listed under the resolutions for the Master of Commerce. The International Business specialisation is not available in this combined degree. Units completed in the combined degree for the International Business component cannot be used to count towards a specialisation in the Commerce component.

7 Progression rules

(1)
Unless otherwise permitted, candidates may only commence the core International Business units once they have completed a minimum of 48 credit points for the Master of Commerce.
(2)
Unless otherwise permitted, candidates must complete the units of study for the Master of International Business in a prescribed sequence as specified by the Business School.

8 Course transfer

A candidate may abandon the combined program and elect to complete the Master of Commerce in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree.

9 Transitional provisions

(1)
These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January, 2012.
(2)
Candidates who commenced prior to 1 January, 2012 must complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement, provided that requirements are completed by 1 January, 2017. The Business School may specify a later date for completion or specify alternative requirements for completion of candidatures that extend beyond this time.
